I tried one of these in 1996 at a jazz camp and was really quite shocked that something that resembled little more than a bass neck with a bridge could sound like it's double bass brethren. After finding this one used in 2005, I had to jump on it.
This is built out of the standard body and fingerboard materials that the Kydds are typically built on. I haven't seen a 6 string ever, aside from this one.
Tonewise, it's great. The B string is a little flubby due to the short scale, but keeping that in mind it's very easy to navigate around on it. I've got D'Addario flats on it and it really emulates the feel and touch of my upright. The only thing I don't like is that the volume tends to lessen as I move to the higher strings. If anything, I think a simple pickup element move may remedy the problem. Overall, it is one of the best purchases I've made for my theatre gigs.
